Distro choices

One of my cow-orkers has gotten fed up with virus-ridden, proprietary OS's, and wants an alternative. He's fairly sharp on tech-skills, but has limited time to mess with things. He doesn't want to DL a large distro because it would tie up his computer too long. What are some good choices?
