Distro Choice for Video Box

I need a distro to run off a 16gig hard drive, as small as possible. It must be VERY fast. I intend to use this computer as a video box to serve and capture video off my Canopus box (Canopus ADVC100, effectively a camcorder). I looked a bit but found nothing definite. SmallX looks like what I'm looking for. I need X, compatability with Windows as a client or file server, and a good app to do the captures. Any ideas?

VERY fast you say? I'd stay away from the rpm based distros and go with a sourced based distro like Slackware, Gentoo, or Debain. I'd suggest installing Gentoo from a stage1 to get an, as the people at Gentoo claim, "uber-optimized" operating system.

Very well. I was also looking at CoreLinux, as I could build it myself. Only thing is, I have problems sometimes with the big Linux distros (*cough cough redhat cough*) not wanting to install the frigging dependencies (i.e like GTK, Python, etc.) Is that the same with corelinux? Also, I'm building a Ham packet radio system on Core. Good idea or no and why?
