Distribution reccomended ?

Hi all,

I am somewhat new to Linux. I have done a few tasks in bash, and I have used a few of the main distros (Ubuntu and derivatives, Slax, DSL, Debian).

Well, I was wondering. I am getting a laptop in a few weeks, and I am wondering, what distribution would you recommend for my needs? I would want something with a GUI, but I would also want to be able to use the Terminal easily. I am thinking Ubuntu, but I would be fine with trying Debian with GNOME or a desktop manager like it.

Any reccomendations or suggestions? I am willing to learn some things out of this.

If you are completely new to linux .... Then use ubuntu.

openSUSE 11.2 is new one, which is faster than ubuntu 9.10.

SuSE installation is also quite easier than other distibutions.

Try Linux Mint 8 or openSUSE 11.2. I would stay away from ubuntu 9.10 if I were you.

You might want to try a some what of a newcomer distro, Pardus 2009. It sports the KDE desktop environment, and many useful apps. I'm presently evaluating it on VMware, and am quite pleased. Just Google Pardus 2009. I can't post the link this is my first posting as a newbie to LinuxQuestions.

Also you might try OpenSuse 11.2, Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope stay away from 9.10 Karmic its still a little flakey and uses newer Grub2 which I'm not yet fond of. You might also try test driving these distros using VMware.

Sweet! Thank you all! I am downloading the Live GNOME of OpenSUSE 11.2, as I am not a complete noob to Linux. Could I use " apt-get install " in OpenSUSE?

EDIT: Nevermind. I figured it out. Thanks again for the help. I will post again when I install it (within 20 days).

Thanks,

One more thing...

If I were to choose to dual boot, could I resize a NTFS partition in the OpenSuse setup? I would be sure to defragment the Windows partition ~5 times.

Yes, using the YaST partitioner, during setup. I've provided a link that may be of further assistance to you.
