You are right... many people...

I just dislike the very long compile times... I don't know why... they don't bother me nearly as much in FreeBSD... Maybe it's because I can install a binary to use ASAP, then rebuild from source when I feel like it??
I dislike all the masked packages and whatnot... If I build my system for a Pentium 4, I shouldn't have to add the names of fonts to some obscure portage file just because the FONT was masked as ~x86... wtf?? IT'S A FONT!!!
right... Another problem I had with Gentoo is you could not get past the portage. I want X program but it is not in portage. So sorry... you must use portage or compile it to where portage understands it.

Simple things like this have drove me off of Gentoo... I usually go back and try it again every few months... because I really would like to like it... I like portage...I like the customization, the colors, the init layouts.. etc.. *shrug*
Again... same here.

However, when I need something that just works(that is Linux).. I usually go with Debian...testing. Stable gets too annoying with old software, and SID breaks rather frequently... testing is generally just about a perfect mix of the two.
... again.. my same thoughts. weird. are you like a mind reader?

My favorite of all is FreeBSD..then Debian.. I'm not sure what would come after that..
I have been scared of BSD for the reason of re-learning so many things. I am thinking that I will have so much to relearn, that I will not have time.
Hummm... perhaps Ubuntu is right for now. Play later with others..
I know it is not like windows. Windows is revolting in many ways, and the price is way too high. I have tried just about every distro out there.... over the last 6 years. However I have been using Debian, or some for of Debian i.e. Libranet, Ubuntu, etc, for the last two years. So many things have changed... some have not.
I just found this in another thread: it's a distro-picker quiz (needs java enabled).
It's cute and fun.
It picked Fedora for me with the next two choices being debian and ubuntu. Not bad (see left).
Sticking ja1180's requirements into it suggests ubuntu as the best fit- with no other options. Not all the options could be satisfied by any distro in their database.
But then, I added 1-click package installation and a graphical installer (only misses in ubuntu).

Very accurate, I tried with my profile and got Gentoo and Slack.
I later tried with a beginner, no knowledge of Linux and low general knowledge. The results where Linspire (I also choose one click software installation), and as Mandriva and Mepis as near misses (both missed 'one click installation').
Nice, but I miss a question like if it matters to maintain a system constantly upgraded (the way Debian does).
Ha yes, Linspire is very good for the ignorant. Wether this is a good thing depends on your outlook and values. Personaly I would recommend against being ignorant myself
The test people are keen for feedback - let them know.
I wonder which question would lead you to Ubuntu:
"Would you like a desktop background with a precious black girl?"
... heh... I suspect it was the combination of moderate experience, an insistence on gnome and "debian-like". (For debian like I specified "apt-get" as required.)
It seems fair - however I would be interested to know how many distros are in the database and how they rate for each possible answer. I doubt that so few questions will make fine distinctions between many distros. But it is fun, like magazine personality quizes.
It may be neet to put the link in a sticky? (Or a link - considering how many times the "what is the best distro for..." question comes up.)
here's how the distributions in the database match up to your choices:
Distro name Match %
Ubuntu 4/11: 36%
Mandriva 6/11: 54%
SuSe 6/11: 54%
Fedora 5/11: 45%
MEPIS 6/11: 54%
Knoppix 7/11: 63%
Debian 7/11: 63%
Damn Small 4/11: 36%
Gentoo 8/11: 72% <<<<< --- me right here
Slackware 5/11: 45%
Vector 3/11: 27%
Kanotix 7/11: 63%
Arch 7/11: 63%
Ark 6/11: 54%
LFS 7/11: 63%
Beatrix 5/11: 45%
EvilEntity 4/11: 36%
Based on these results we recommend you to try(if you haven't tried it yet):
Gentoo
At least I know why I am happy with Gentoo. Neat little test though. When I was first starting out, this would have been nice to take then too. It would have had a different outcome though.
