Debian v. Gentoo

What's the difference between Debian and Gentoo? Which is the one that compiles everything (and takes days doing it)? I always hear them referenced together so I'm kinda confused. Thanks!

Gentoo compiles everything.Why they are always compared is beyound me since they are completely different.
