Debian Gurus Needed!!!
 

Hey guys,
I'm trying to get debian 3.0 installed on a 12 Gb partition. I have put the 2 binaries in /boot/newinstall, added debootstrap, and downloaded a lot of packages which were extracted very properly on the partition. I made the fstab, mounted everything, but THEN--it's time to run dpkg-reconfigure console-data. Here's what I get:

HAL:/# dpkg-reconfigure console-data
bash: dpkg-reconfigure: command not found
HAL:/# echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/home/jeff/bin


I know I've been able to run this before. Maybe it was in basedebs.tar?
I'm going crazy because I just CAN'T STOP WITH THE LINUX!!!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well - I don't understand what you are trying to do there dbootstrap,2 binaries,whatever.If you do apt-get install deselect it should install everything that has to do with package maintenance.

I'm following the installation guide. I'm on page 29 of 'Installing Debian GNU Linux for i386. I'll try to get apt-get going, but at this point it looks like it DEPENDS on getting the dpkg stuff going...

Sorry bout that - never used the installation guide.I'll try to find it and have a look.

Can you use 'whereis dpkg'?dpkg should be in /usr/bin.It's normally one of the first things that get installed.Also give dpkg --reconfigure a spin.I am not sure about the correct syntax and can't get to to my debian box right now.

Whereis, locate, or find didn't make it into the binaries. dpkg-(anything) also only exists as a .deb package way down in /var/var/something...
I'm pretty well screwed. I just don't see a way, yet. If I use alien to open a copy of dpkg-reconfigure, it won't run because the TIME and LANGUAGE is not set. Like I care! I'd speak Chinese to get this F$%*!#G thing going! Also, base-config is totally missing. It's not just an ftp issue either. I've gotten it this way, or worse, from several ftp sites.
I've got to be missing something.......

Well - I am stuck.I only did net installs so far.So I really don't know the regular install process.You might want to try to send an email to debian-user@lists.debian.org and mention to CC you since you are not subscribed there.Thats where the real debian gurus hang around anyway.

OK, thanks!! When you say you did a net install, you mean on a network? Or the internet? I wonder if there's a way jigdo can help in all this...

I ususally grab a minimal install cd image (about 30 mb) and burn it.Then I boot from that and pull everything else as needed from the internet.It's the way to go if you can setup internet access from the minimal cd and are ok with kernel 2.2.20 and ext2 file system to start with.Because of that I got no idea about jigdo - never used it. You can also see http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst for info.
