Creating a Ubuntu 8.10 liveCD with all updates installed

Hi Guys

Ive gotten a project from a local school in a very rural town to upgrade the computer systems on a very low budget. So, being a F/OSS advocate I ran the idea of a linux environment which, in reality will cost hundereds (maybe thousands) less for them, and also cut down "down-time" due to viruses and such. I was thinking of Ubuntu since its got a great community, and personally, I love it. Problem is, this school is on a limited bandwidth for internet, so installing ubuntu and performing the updates is not a feasible idea since the cost will be astronomical. My question is, how can I go about an simply "update" the ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD so that when I install it, It will have all the updates? Another thing that would be nice, is that this school would like to have their own wallpaper, so if I could change the default wallpaper while I'm performing this "update" will be very nice.

Thanks ahead of time,

Jon York

You want to install the latest up to date Ubuntu. But since you won't have online updates the installed systems will drift out of date over time. If drifting out of date is acceptable then I suggest that you use the latest Ubuntu CD you can find and don't worry about the very latest updates.

Another thought: If you want to use Ubuntu in the classroom you should take a look at Edubuntu. Edubuntu might fit your needs better.

P.S. You could have the wallpaper, or anything else you want, on a second CD. After the install you could replace the wallpaper from the second CD.

Use a tool like apt-torrent

Use a tool like apt-p2p or debtorrent or apt-torrent so that the computers download updates from each other.

updating low bandwidth / disconnected machines

There is apt-medium you could adopt.

apt-medium can be found at: http://wiki.debian.org/AptMedium

its pretty easy really

I made a script that will update/upgrade/install extra software on most any ubutnu
though I havent tried 8.10

any reason you wanna use 8.10??

If you want to know about the script post back and I'll explain

basically, the script takes the origina iso
updates/upgrades and then installs software if you wish

you set up the desktop via Xnest, etc
