Couldn't display "cdda:///dev/hdc" - Audio CD issue
So... I reformatted my linux partition and installed Gentoo on it again from scratch. Everything went well till I tried to play an audio CD.
It prompts me this error:
Code:
Can't display location.
Couldn't display "cdda:///dev/hdc".
When I click in the audio CD icon. If I try to open the cd player that comes with GNOME, it recognizes the CD, identifies the names of the songs and artists, seems to be playing it, but I have no sound whatsoever.
My sounds work perfectly otherwise, I just can't play audio CDs.
My CD drive works perfectly too, I can read data without issues - The issue is exclusively with audio CDs, it recognizes them, it just doesn't play them.
Also, before formatting I could play CDs normally, I'm trying to find what I did differently but I can't figure it out.
Any suggestions?

This behaviour is consistent with a missing audio cable in your PC.

Nope, wire is there... just double-checked to be sure.
As I mentioned, though, it was working - I formatted and reinstalled and then it stopped working. No changes in hardware whatsoever.
EDIT: My guesses were either something in the kernel, ALSA or fstab... but I've tinkered with them without any sucess. I tried making the options of the cd drive noauto and user to see if ti helped any, reconfiguerd ALSA, browsed around in the kernel... not sure what else to do.

Maybe try adjusting the CD volume in your sound mixer.

Already tried too, both from alsamixer and the gnome volume control to see if there was an issue there. All channels are unmuted and at a good level. All the other sounds play well, just have issues with CDs in any cd-player software.

hmmmm.... This is getting tougher....
Does your /dev/cdrom symlink point to the correct device?

Code:
localhost ~ # ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 May 2 2006 /dev/cdrom -> hdc
EDIT: Just tried some MP3s too, they sound great. Just... no playing from CD.
EDIT2: /dev/dvd also points to hdc... not sure if that means anything harmful, but figured I'd mention it anyway.
EDIT3: Hm, not sure this is the right forum for this discussion anyhow.... I'll post a thread in the hardware section, please check that one over there and don't answer here. Wish I could delete it... Already reported it and hopefuly will get removed soon. Sorry for the mishap.
