Configuring the main menu in RedHat 8.0
I would like to add some launchers to the main menu in RedHat 8.0 (gnome 2) and move some of the other launchers to different menu directories. The documentation on the gnome site indicates that a right-click drop down menu is used to accomplish this task but on my RedHat distro all the usefull menu options seem to have been removed. Is there another way of modifying the main menu? or what file provides the configuration information for the main menu and can this file be easily modified manually?

born4linux,
I've had a look at the applications.menu file and although I don't know any xml most of it looks reasonably logical. It seems to me that this file compiles launchers from all over the place into the one menu. There is one section that has me stumped, between the <query> sections there are keywords. What is this section for?

uh uh
try checking the files in this directory instead:
/usr/share/applications
you can make a custom menu entry based from the files here. easier to comprehend compared to the applications.menu file

How do I group them into the menu headings that I want? I can add to / subtract from the Extras>Internet menu by building an application launcher on the desktop and then moving it into the /etc/X11/applink/Internet directory and the Extras>System tools menu from /usr/share/gnome/apps/System but that is all I have so far managed.

xml rocks!!!!!
thanks for this thread. i figured it out with this!
[/etc/x11/desktop-menus] --> has files with keywords; keywords pull icons into menus; read these files to learn about what keywords do what and what files and directories are included
[/usr/share/applications] --> has launcher files - you can textedit those, they are all xml-files; check the existing ones out and read them so you understand the meaning of the categories: ...;...;...; tags - create new launcheritems on desktop with rightmousbuttonclick - then copy new ones into this folder, textedit them and add the configure ... keyword-line at the end, so they will be pulled into the menu of your choice!
i typed it up on my website; full text:

Has anyone heard from RedHat on when(if) a fix for this will be released? As I understand it, the problem was that GNOME didn't have a working version of the menu editor when 8.0 was released.
As a sidenote, for those who may be interested, there is a nice tutorial here for those that would like to edit their menu manually.

Just updated to redhat 8.0 and encountered today the same
kind of problems. Seems that Redhat is hiding a lot of the
usefull gnome stuff.
Normally there must be a nemu "Advanced" available, but
even after different types of install and cut-n-paste in
directories, couldn't make the menu appear.
All menu items are there /usr/share/desktop....
I'll give it a try with the hint above.
Seems that Redhat want to go Microsoft style, a little bit
more and the registery misery appears.

Actually, I just checked the Notre Dame mirror (my personal favorite for its speed) and I couldn't locate it. Do you have a specific location where I might be able to find it?
I'm guessing there isn't any easy way to upgrade other than to download the new ISO images, burn them onto a CD and then upgrade my 8.0 installation. Is that right?

Is your Notre Dame mirror one of the officially listed RedHat mirrors?
I obviously didn't check all the mirror sites, but I did find my Australian mirrors had it immediately available.
I found it in the beta directory of the RedHat directory. I got mine from mirror.aarnet.edu.au.
You can easily grab some quick links from www.distrowatch.com .
You can do an upgrade from 8.0.
If you don't want to download the full three isos about 1.9Gb, then you can probably do a network install/upgrade. I am not sure if the network upgrade would be any quicker though.
Note that it is BETA.

Yes it is, but they may not be carrying the BETA. I'm thinking that I'll probably wait until an update is released that fixes the menu issue. I've managed to get around it for now by just placing the launcher icons for the programs I use most on a separate panel. I rarely use the menu in either Linux or WinBLOWS, so it isn't a big deal.

When installing RH8.0 and selecting for the configuration
via individual files (Select and install type - workstation
or server and the 'vote for' individual files) in one of
the menus two files exist:
Redhat-artwork
Redhat-menus
Both contain the XML files Redhat used to customize GNOME
(the bare foot disapeared in favor of the red hat, etc.)
I tried to leave these files out when istalling, but other
tools depent from them.
So in stead of jumping to RH8.1 is there no image (RMP or
other) to replace the RH customized stuff.
Regards,

Adding menus without updating XML file
Does anyone know if there is a way to add a sub menu without going into the XML file and adding a <folder> </folder> section. We need our install to add a menu, but editing XML files with our install app is not something we would like to do.
