complete Newbie to suse, need installation walk through
Hey , i'm changing from a windows xp o/s to the linux SuSE distro. In the past couple of weeks i've tried getting into the linux world and learning syntax etc, for instance i learnt up abt mounting hardware etc.
Problem is i'm a full time windows user, i always have used windows. I've never even seen linux running but i REALLY wanna change cos windows sucks big floppy donkey dick and is incredibly slow.
I have the 6 cd suse distro and i have burnt all my files i wanna keep onto a cd, the rest are on a secondary hdd. I am going to re-format my hdd and then boot with the suse cd in the drive.
I need to know abt the following, i'm a graphic designer so this is essential
can i run adobe's photoshop and illustrator in suse?
can i run macromedias flash and dreamweaver in suse?
how difficult will it be to connect to the internet?
If someone could provide a link to a newbie suse site where it goes through all this stuff tht would be fantastic
oh i'm a php programmer and i program AS, so i'm not completly programming retarded, tell me if there is gonna be alot of tht
suse (all versions of linux) come with the gimp(gnu image manipulation program)
this is comparable to photoshop though not quite as fancy and feature laden
i'm not sure about the others, they may be possible to run in wine/winex
re the internet,
it depends on what your connection is, suse has some "winmodem" drivers but not as many as windows
other than that it's either a hardware modem
or some other form of connection

the set up is remarkable easy
suse is a pretty cool place to start
ok i have heard abt the gimp but i HAVE to have adobe photoshop and illustrator and macromedia flash i can't downgrade, i HAVE to have this for work reasons, its my income man!
internet i have a pci modem, its a basic 56k i'd imagine it'd work.
my friend has linux suse and told me tht flash and photoshop work fine on it! he also told me that any program will work on it.. is he lieing?
Not lying, just not giving the whole story. Many programs will run on Linux using Wine or WineX or Crossover Office - to a greater or lesser extent. At the same time, just about any Win based program has a Linux equivalent.
The GIMP isn't a downgrade - it's not like switching Photoshop for MSPaint - it can do everything (I think) that Photoshop can do. I have seen some excellent pictures and things done with the GIMP. AFAIK, it even 'feels' like Photoshop, this is the GIMP's homepage, have a look at it. Just had a look at the gallery - grrrreat. And niiice.
