Hello!

I'm trying to find a suitable Linux distribution to run my NAS server from.

The NAS will be holding files for both Windows (XP sp2) and Mac OS X (10.4), as well as running a web server - for intranet use only; it doesn't need to be connected to the Internet.


My hardware requirements are:
- Jetway J7F2 1.2GHz Eden Fanless / Via C7 i686.
- Stored on a 512MB CF card via a CF->IDE adapter.
- Preferably running in a RAM-disk (to prevent killing the CF card).
- Capable of having a pair of WD 500GB SATA II drives as RAID-1.

And software-wise, I need it to run:
- Samba/AppleTalk/etc (all the regular NAS stuff).
- Gamin to provide continuous backup.
- Java, Apache Tomcat, Railo and PHP.
- MySQL and PostgreSQL.


I've been looking around but I don't really know enough to figure out what the best option(s) for this are.


I was considering Arch, but that uses FAM rather than Gamin, and I'm not sure if it's possible to switch over?


So, can anyone here provide me with suggestions on what distos to look at?

(and any help/advice on how to set things up would also be greatly appreciated)

The installation guide for Openfiler says it needs 4GB of space ( excluding /swap )
Do you know if it actually does require that much, or if it can be cut down to fit into something more reasonable?

Hmmm, well apparently the absolute minimum is 1.2GB, although I'm not sure why/how.

The ISO is only 287MB, and... well, I just can't understand where the extra gig comes from? And it's supposed to just be a lightweight file/storage management system, yes? So WTF is actually in it that fills up so much space?
