chroot'ing problem in Gentoo Stage 1 Install

Howdy! As the title states, I'm trying to install Gentoo on my machine, and have followed the manual religiously. No problems until I get to the chrooting part. I get:

Code:
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
chroot: cannot run command 'bin/bash' : Exec Format Error
Unfortunately, I have no idea what that means, or what to do from here. Any advice? Thanks.

Just a couple of observations

You are in the right directory ?

Code:
# cd /mnt/gentoo
Did you mount the proc file system ?

Code:
# mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
That's about all I can suggest at the moment

Yeah, I had to double check that

Yeah. I can umount and mount again though, just in case I misplaced it.

Yeah, but I have no idea how to check if it's "right" or not....

Thanks for the help guys, any other ideas? Or better ways to check the above?

Are you sure you have the right livecd in the drive? If you are trying to chroot on a i386 with an AMD64 disk, it will error like this.

Here are some threads on the gentoo forum that confirm this could be the issue:

Permissions are ok (but shouldn't being root negate any permission problems, anyway?)

I used the DVD out of the latest Linux Format magazine, and downloaded the AMD64 stage from http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo/releases/amd64/

To my knowledge, the Portage snapshot is independent of architecture (set in make.conf). If you think it will help, I can burn my own disk from an AMD64 specific ISO image....
