My main goal is to learn more about Linux but I want it as a replacement to Windows so sound is also a type of requirement. I am planning on replacing my sound card because even Windows had a problem at first, which it shouldn't have. But as you suggest, I will do one distro at a time, I just figured that since I have the books on both distros, that I would learn them both at the same time. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and I will just do one at a time until I become familiar. DaveThePuzzled |
vectordrake,
Mine has not worked "out of the box" unfortunately and even in Windows, it hasn't. Well, at least in Win98SE and below it did but nothing above Win2000 or above without some extra work. You also want to know a funny thing about that. Even MS didn't know what was happening and it is their OS. DaveThePuzzled |
"Dave, hmm, you may be right that fdisk /mbr will not work on NTFS partitions. I'll admit I don't know for sure."
True. You need to boot to the recovery console with your cd and type "fixmbr". " You also want to know a funny thing about that. Even MS didn't know what was happening and it is their OS." I bet you don't think its very funny. I wonder if the card you have uses the same bastardized chipset that some of the Dell workstations have. There is no current Linux module for it. I just went through a convoluted search with another LQ member about a week ago over this same thing |
Well, the thing is vectordrake. I pulled my card and looked at the biggest chip you told me to do and it says on it is big letters "Creative" and has the EMU10K1 on it as well....with of course, a bunch of small number and letters that have no rhymn and reason other than for manufacturing reference, probably.

Yeah, it looks like Gateway has a similar situation as Dell. They've done something with the OEM chip and made it difficult. The only results will have to come from Gateway, I guess (or get a new card, like you said - ebay has inexpensive ones all the time)
