SuSE installed fine with my Athlon64. Are you sure your ISO was good? Which SuSE did you try to install? I used the SuSE 10 "evaluation" version DVD and no problems.
Hanging up at the package evaluation stage seems a bit like a bad CD to me, but who knows? More specific info, error meassages might help.
i was trying suse 10.0 evaluation, but on CD's not DVD... when my friend gets back into town i will try it with the DVDs... but here is the messsages from an attempt to install kubuntu
I'm also trying to install on a 64bit but this is turion. 2 out of the millions of distros I've tried to install couldn't run X on my screen (Solaris, and after a while gentoo), both Ubuntu's crashed when they detected my keyboard, Fedora 4 updated it's kernel and died, OpenSuSE 10.0 64 (I think it was), both internet and 5 cd installation froze as soon as I selected installation in grub. As you can probably tell it's not my day. Any ideas for a distro that will actually work? Gentoo 64 ran beutifully until I tried to do my french homework: I tried to change my keyboard layout in xorg.conf. Big mistake. I decided that it would be a good idea to put xorg.conf.new in /etc/X11 (it was in /root). I rebooted and it died. I didn't even have my french keyboard!!! X wouldn't start, so I put the file back, and it still didn't work, then I did X -configure and it complained exactly the same way. If you can give me some advice, please let me know, I'll probably resort to Gentoo.

My Compaq Presario v2413us with AMD Turion runs XP 32, XP 64, and Mandriva x64 2006.0 very well, including audio, video, and wireless. It installed flawlessly. Also, uses powernowd (came with the distro) to throttle CPU between 800 and 1600 mhz.
That's really impressive. I might try it. Have you gotten suspend to work at all? Mine, now under fedora 64, shuts down when it tries to resume. Also, have you had any luck with usb keys?

The suspend functionality in Mandr(iva, ake) is disabled by default. I have neither enabled nor experimented with it.
Name: suspend-scripts-force
Version: 1.9.2-1mdk
Summary: Package to enable suspend and resume
give rpath a try. http://www.rpath.org I, like you, have tried every flipping 64 bit OS, that distrowatch displays in their 64 bit search.
The only successful ones i've had are rr64 (really good on my desktop athlon XP) and I use rpath on my turion64 chipped laptop(which i'm using now). Great support through freenode chat, and a real treat to work with. I couldn't get RR64 going on this turion, but i like using different versions of gnu/linux anyways. Caos is good too, but with my ATI card, i needed a 6.8 X server based distro, until ati gets their act together. powernowd doesn't come with rpath, yet, but it's available in their conary repository. You should really check it out.
haven't complied the X myself yet but obviously you should not change keyboard layout in xorg.conf, i.e. check /etc/conf.d/keymaps. X provides, as everything else, extensive log features. You should review them if you want to start to debug the problem.
Please be more specific about your problems and your hardware. The crashing while detecting keyboard sounds very interesting, though I doubt it's about the keyboard per se.
Well, I've been distro-hopping, and I just got Gentoo to install. I think I can mess with xkbd to switch the keyboard layout. The utility I was looking for was xorgconfig. Thanks for the help though.
