Can't mount floppy in Redhat 8

This is more of an annoyance then an actual problem to me. I installed RH 8 and everything seems to work fine. I have an older Digital laptop that I need to swap the cdrom and floppy with when I need them. For some resaon, I can not get the floppy to mount. I continually get the error message that /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device. I have tried many variations of the mount command and always get the same result. Dmesg tells me that the floppy is there. If I run modprobe floppy, it tells me that no module can be found. The odd thing also is that it works fine with Mandrake 9. (I also have extra hard drives). Anybody have any idea as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks

If you put another floppy in, would it do the same? I had the same problem untill I put another floppy in (I have three of them :), I mean floppies not floppy drives). And the one that crippled on me mounted ok on gentoo box, really have no idea what magic gentoo performed that slackware couldn't do.

I tried several different floppies and had the same results. I found a report in bugzilla where somebody was having the same problem. Hopefully Redhat will figure this out quickly. I'm still very much open to any other ideas that anyone may have.

your problem might be caused by swapping the devices. Does your floppy drive work ok if you boot the computer with it in the drive bay? If so, try switching to the CDROM and see if your CDROM still works (without rebooting).
