the easiest is to add a chainloader menu to the mandriva /boot/grub/menu.lst using root powers

you have not told us your /etc/fstab structure so read my signature and if no understandee post your partition structure pls

also let us know if any of the partitions is raided or LVM

You should install GRUB from the Ubuntu cd on the MBR.Open root terminal,type grub,after that type grub-install /dev/hda or whatever the name is for your hard disk.After that go to the /boot/grub/menu.lst and open that file and add entry for Mandriva-it looks something like this;
title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=7abf0e4c-7be2-4a0c-a74f-96b5efda3aa0 ro single
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic

with different data,wich you can find in Mandriva /boot/grub/menu.lst,then do the same with Mandriva cd,but then install grub on the root partition(which is partition where your Mandriva is installed) and don't add any entry in the /boot/grub/menu.lst.
It could be done easier,to install grub from Ubuntu cd on the Ubuntu partition and add an entry in Mandriva but I suggest you to make Ubuntu default OS.
