boot floppy for laptop--knoppix

My laptop has a PCMCIA cd-rom and I can't boot the knoppix cd from it. I've been trying to make a boot floppy using 'su -c mkboot' but I get:

'cp:writing'/tmp/boot3859/vmlinuz':no space left on device'

What are some alternatives to making the boot floppy?

(Using knoppix 3.8)

You need a smaller kernel to boot from a floppy.

You can boot the floppy kernel without a boot loader to save space. You could also use different floppy formats. 1.74 MB should work on most drives, however I have seen claims that it can damage a drive. I doubt that that would be true.

floppy kernel

I assume the floppy kernel is that file called 'linux' that is 1.44. I didn't know that if I just write that in raw mode it will boot. Assuming it detects the PCMCIA device, I should be able to use a "cheatcode" to boot the cd, right?

Rather than a boot floppy that contains a kernel, you could make a lilo or grub boot floppy. For example, changing the 'boot=' entry of /etc/lilo.conf to read: boot=/dev/fd0 and running /sbin/lilo as root will write the lilo boot loader to the floppy disk. The other entries will need to be correct also.

You may have better luck trying to make a grub boot floppy disk. This is because grub has auto-completion from the grub shell, so you can boot from the grub shell, guess where the kernel is and use the tab-key to finish the line. I think that you could even create a grub boot floppy on a different computer.

My concern with either of those options is that I won't be able to mount the partition if it is on a device that isn't bootable. So, for example, if I have

boot = /dev/sda
where, 'sda' refers to the pcmcia device

in lilo.conf, I'm going to get an error.

Maybe I'm trying to do something beyond the hardware here, I don't know.

If your BIOS does not support the external device you need linux on a floppy.
