best version of mandrake?

hey guys i was just wondering what is the best version of mandrake linux. The best meaning easiest, most stable, and reliable. I am running windows 98 on this box right now and looking to do a dual boot. I have an amd athlon 550, 96mb ram, 20gb, 8mb vanta video card, and a d-link adsl modem. Thanks for any help!

Mandrake 8.1 is the very newest version and from what i've seen, they put alot of work into thier distro as far as stability and user friendliness. I used to use 7.0 when I first started using Linux and it was a great starter. But go with the newest one, Nothing but good things about it and far more support than older versions.

Hey,

I'm currently running the Mandrak 8.1 distribution and everything works great. It's very stable and user-friendly, and in my opinion, one of the best distribtutions I've tried. :D

Artamir-
are you doing a dual boot or running it off of your windows? im thinking of running it off of my windows partation since it seems easiest...

Artamir 11-26-2001 05:08 PM

I'm doing a dual boot. :)

grrr

ive been trying for the past hour to install mandrake 8.1 and after it installs everything it says "no hdlists found"
anybody know what this could be?
its kinda confusing with the partations and stuff, since i want to install it using the "lnx4win" feature. I'll give it another try tomorrow. argh this is frustrating! :(

taz.devil 11-26-2001 10:20 PM

I'm not sure if i remember correctly when I tried lnx4win with 7.0, but since it's made to run from Windows, sorta, you shouldn't need any special partitions. What it should be doing is creating a directory and an image to run from. If you already have seperate partitions, try going for it fullon instead of lnx4win. I remember haveing very little luck with 'any' of this type of distro install. I tried ZipSlack for fun when i got Slackware and although it does run ok, it's very limited in space and just doesn't feel like the "real deal".

Do Not Run lnx4win

DO NOT RUN LNX4WIN!!! make a sepparate non-dos partition for this. I had some trouble when i tried to do lnx4win and they had to send me a whole new hard drive because i couldn't fdisk the computer again. I hope this finds you in time.

mikez 12-02-2001 09:18 PM

yea, it didn't work anyway, it just wouldn't install when i tryed lnx4win. I dont know what to make my partitions(how big to have them). I have a 20gb drive but window says its capicity is only 17.5gb. 11.8gb used and 5.81gb free. How can i tell if its already partitioned? I think its already parition because i used to screw around with this comp a lot. i need help! ahhhh
thanks.

restart in MS-DOS mode and then type fdisk. just follow the prompts until you get to the menu. choose option four to see all of your partitions. a program that you can use to set up your partitions is Partition Magic. you cannot setup a non dos partition in fdisk unfortunately. go to www.download.com and look up in the search box partition. then download Symon R2 Professional. Its free. if you want to fork over some money, patition magic is a great program also. i hope this helps. e-mail me if you have any more questions. count_nikon@yahoo.com

No Sound Card!!!

8.1 is fine but it didn't recognize an OPL3SA2 (Yamaha) sound card on my box! I had to add a couple of lines in my /etc/modules.conf file:

#echo "alias sound-slot-0 opl3sa2" >> /etc/modules.conf

That's strange, because RH 7.1, Suse 7.0, Mandrake 7.0 & 8.0, EasyLinux, BestLinux and so on automagically set it up!

no hdlists found

 I also have this trouble - no hdlists found when I install the Mandrake 8.1, it take me many of hours !!! If somebody know how to do please let me know, thank you very much !!!

treverm 01-30-2002 09:06 PM

no hdlists I get a lot too.. maybe 1 time out of 3 installs actually works for me the rest all fail with this dumb error which waits till after the long install is done... I have tried with various hard drives in the 2gig to 4gig range, as well as with different media.. including one http based install... this must be a bug of some sort.

therion12 01-31-2002 07:42 AM

I got that when i tried installing Mandrake 8.2 beta...i hate that.
