Best LiveCD for ancient laptops
 

My school recently acquired a goldmine (or landmine...) of several ancient decommisioned military laptops. They have 2.2 GB HDs, 166 MHz Pentiums, and 32MB of RAM. Easy: install Linux. Problem: the tech director at my school currently uses a Windows network and is a Mac addict, and wants to start with Win98 on these and upgrade to 2000. That's terrifying to me. Unfortunately, I can't exactly put OS X on these, although I really can't touch the hard drives (which are wiped clean) anyway. My thought was to get a LiveCD distro and show how easily a minilab of these could be set up, but I don't know which one is best for these. Could someone reccomend one, or maybe just tell me to get a real distro (no offense to LiveCDs) and install it temporarily?

maybe you would like to do mininmal install of any distro with icewm or XFCE window managers

Knoppix is always a good general-purpose LiveCD. It might be worth a try. I don't know how the performance would be with KDE, though. If you can find something that uses fluxbox, you'd be better off.

damn small linux is live, 50 MB ISO, works on a business card cd. very nice system, its debian based, has a nice window manager, and is fast. can also be installed to the HD is you want.
