www.distrowatch.com
It would be easier to list those active distributions that would be unsuitable than to list all of those that might serve well.
I would think that ANY of the current 64-bit versions that are not terribly bloated would serve. Core ones that should serve very well might include DEBIAN (testing, to get the latest packages), Debian's bastard child Ubuntu might serve, or even Fedora should come to mind at once. There are SO MANY others that would also do all you mentioned on that hardware.
I would recommend trying it out with TinyCore (or MultiCore, since there is nothing about your requirement that forces a LOCAL desktop), except that I am not sure that is available for 64-bit. Check the site if you are interested.
Researching it question at Distrowatch might be productive.

Thanks for the info, I'll google half of what you just said (as I don't know those technologies lol). Much appreciated.

Did you get a chance to try the current version of Ubuntu working?
There is a new release just today, in fact.

Hi, thanks for the info. No, i have to wait until we have unlimited internet cap in November before I can try. I'm also waiting on a few friends to get back to me. Nobody I know really has what I'm looking for, or they live too far away. Most don't really know much more than me, which is very little, about linux, that's why i'm relying on the friendly and helpful people on LQ lol.

If you are on limited bandwidth, visit your local news stand and check out the various Linux magazines. They usually come with a CD or DVD with various distros that you can test-drive. Just a suggestion.

Thanks, I have been on the lookout for that. I bought the last two months PC Format hoping they would have it, but have only found useful utilities to mess around with on windows lol. Do you have the names of the more popular magazines that might be available in SA by any chance?

Best Linux OS for my Requirements
Hi all,
I am looking for the best Linux (Distribution?) to run on my pc with the following specs, for the following purposes:

CPU: Intel Core i5-2400 @ 3.1GHz
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 1000 (GT1) - Sandy Bridge...?
RAM: 8GB
My Requirements are as follows:- Web Server
- Email Server
- Run virtual desktops from within
- Run on only 20Gigs partition
- Utilize all 8gigs RAM
- Generally the best and latest linux version to use
- Must maximize my Hardware Capabilities
- Able to interface with 1.3TB NTFS partition
Thanks to all who read and reply, I've posted this question in general before, but after reading trickykid's "Please Read: Before Creating a New Thread/Posting in this Forum and all other Forums!" post, I figure I should start doing things right while getting used to how things work on LQ.
Lastly, I'm sure that everyone who replies has their bias opinion based on what they're using, but I'd really like to make the best decision here for my own requirements. This will most likely be the Linux OS I come to master (or just become kinda good at) first, and I'll be spending a lot of time with it, so some objectivity would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for reading

for the hardware
any new OS
what is it YOU want to do and YOUR experience with computers
that will point you to a OS that fits your needs
have a look at the top ten
http://distrowatch.com/
then do the research
for a web server
RHEL6.1
Debain stable
SELS 11
all 3 have commercial ( for $$$ ) support
and free alternatives

I know I've seen people say that they have bought 'linux fomat' magazines in South Africa.
Most of the linux magazines arent cheap, and the ones with distros on CD/DVD tend to be even more expensive. A lot of the time it can be worth it though, besides saving you a big d/l there can be articles in the magazine that can help you installing and setting up the distros they have on the CD/DVD.
