I've never used the graphical installer myself either. I hear it sucks. Installing the old fashioned way isn't that hard as long as you follow the instructions in the handbook, and it's a great way to learn the internals of the OS.

I tried the graphical installer and I can honestly say it is terrible. It was much easier to use the book and install one step at a time. It was also much easier to understand where you were with the install during the manual method.
