this might be some stupid question, but what does it mean when some says "slackware-based" or "red-hat based"?

take redhat, change the packages to suit your needs, call it what you want and that's pretty much it. basically it means that, among other things, its core file system layout and package management is likely to match that of the distro it was based on.
