BackTrack 5 R3 Gnome 64 does have .iso file from torrent link?
I just downloaded via torrent BT5R3-GNOME-64. So I unzip it and I dont find any .iso file in the folder. Only in the casper folder I found this filesystem.squashfs the biggest file. So I have now use the unetbootin and select this file instead of any .iso? Can any one help me on this please?

that archive file is not a zip file it is the .iso the icon does not look like a iso icon on windows for some reason but is an iso. you should have two items in the folder a .txt file and the iso just burn the one that is not .txt.
BTW why BackTrack 5R3. kali linux is the new backtrack. they changed so much that they also changed the name but it is from the same ppl. from now on it is called kali.

Dear Minty,
Yes I just managed to find that and about to update here. The problem now I have burn into my usb but it goes undetected. I used unetbootin to do the burning process? What else could be wrong ya.

minty33 06-22-2013 12:50 PM

whats not detected the usb or the OS after you burn it?

minty33 06-22-2013 12:51 PM

you have 2 options:
1. install it on the usb not burn the image
2. unetbootin can just put it on there as a live bootable

i haven't used unetbootin in a long time but make sure you select the usb as the target on install and it does the rest. the only other thing i can think of is pretty obvious and that is make sure usb is selected in bios as the first boot device or for a one time boot press the appropriate macro key for your computer at start and choose boot from usb in the options

Dear Minty,
What is the different between the two option. I am new to this I guess I did option 2 right. I have set the bios to load from the removable media that the usb itself. But yet its not reacting according.

Dear Minty,
Ok I found out the issue is that by usb is part of the hard drives and not removable drive so I off my other hard drive and now it works smoothly. What are the tools you recommend for a beginner to use. Should I start now with openvas?

minty33 06-22-2013 01:18 PM

the difference is the unetbootin way you just get a live disk with no changes being persistent on re-boot. what that means is if you make a change, add software or create a file they will not be there next time you boot. it is read only. there are ways to make it persitent but that is more involved
the other option is to install it on usb and it works just like any regular OS install on a hard drive except you choose the external disk(usb in your case) as the location to install.

Dear Minty,
I am confuse now did I install or unetbootin way? So how to go with the persistent manner? So for it to install on usb I must first burn on dvd and choose to boot from the dvd and then install on the usb is it?

minty33 06-22-2013 01:26 PM

i don't know what tools to recommend because i don't know what your interested in learning to do. the metasploit frame work is one of the most important tools on there for pentesting but it can be quit advanced. i also strongly hope you have some kind of virtual network you are going to practice on otherwise you are going to probably ruin your own software on your network's computers or get in trouble doing something to someone else. judging by your questions i would strongly suggest learning basics and those basics come well before using backtrack beyond being a script kiddy and following youtube tutorials on hacking facebook and the like. you should be very familiar with networking in general and know some programming and have some admin skills to have an idea of what you are doing.

or fallow the POSTED instructions!!
and use dd to make an ENCRYPTED live usb - with persistence

minty33 06-22-2013 01:31 PM

basically yes. just boot the live disk and run the installer and choose the usb. it sounds like you are very new to linux which is great. i love to hear ppl are switching to linux, but i don't know if BackTrack is the place to start. i don't say this to be rude at all but if you are asking these questions you are not ready for backtrack.

Dear Minty,
Yes I am newbie here. I have actually a web server running. So is ok for me to test on that as is own by us. So should we run openvar or metaspoilt on it first?

newbie14 06-22-2013 01:38 PM

Dear Minty,
Thank you for your help. No I have been using Centos Linux for sometime but not as expert yet still building up my skills. I have people like Unspawn and Matt who have been very much helping me and guiding through with lots of skills yet I feel I got to learn a lot more out there to learn. So actually Unspawn who is the one recommended me this Backtrack to test my web server.
