AVLinux 6.0.2 puts out wrong characters when typing. How to fix?
Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen;
Having made some headway in Ubuntu, Mint, SolydXK with the help of many fine intelligent Linux users, I now find myself in need of some more timely advise.
I used to be an avid KDE fan, but lately find the light weight desktops to be very satisfactory. Mint, Lubuntu, Xubuntu etc have appealing graphics and layout with lightning speed. I discovered a distro called AVLinux which has a TON of audio and visual software already installed. The latest version, 6.0.2 has a new interface that they are calling XFCE410 (I think). This interface looks very much like a typical XFCE desktop like what you would see in Xubuntu, but it has been tweaked so that it is a little more animated. Kind of a cross between KDE and XFCE. Frankly, the huge amount of useful audio and video software, along with this interface made me want to use it as my go-to distro...then BAM, brick wall...the upper right hand keys (Y,U,I,O) put out the wrong character when you type them; something like 45*&....
I was all ready to settle into using this distro then this.
I thought maybe I had a bad download so I did a fresh download using the Ethernet cable instead of wireless, and made another live USB stick and it still does it.
I am surprised I am not seeing the forums blowing up with this problem, unless I am the only one trying to use this distro, or I am the only on one trying it on a Dell Inspiron 1501...
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?
Thanks much for any responses on this.
Cheers

I've tried AVLinux and it was great. The obvious thought is the wrong keyboard driver: what does
setxkbmap -print
output? But "4" for "y"? That looks like no keyboard I've ever seen! Run xev and check the keycodes. You should get 29, 30, 31 for y, u, i. If you don't it would suggest you keyboard has just died.

DavidMcCann -
Thanks for your response. This was actually solved for me in the AVLinux forum by a post by "GMaq".
The suggestion worked perfectly for me.
Gmaq's post was as follows:
Quote:
Hi,
Sounds like you have a keyboard with combination letters and numbers, AV Linux has numlock set to on by default. If you are running it live you will have to shut off the numlock manually with your keyboard numlock key, if you have installed it you will need to open the configuration file for the Slim login manager and disable num lock at boot like this:
From a Root Terminal:
Code: [Select]
gedit /etc/slim.conf
Look for these lines:
Quote
# Activate numlock when slim starts. Valid values: on|off
numlock on
Change 'on' to 'off' and click 'Save' in the gedit text editor
Log out and log back in and numlock should be off by default now

I forget how to mark a thread as "solved".....

I just found out that Gmaq is the (one of?) designer/constructor of AVLinux.
