arch linux
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has tried using Arch Linux, and what their experiences have been. arch linux website I am getting a new box from Santa (I know this because Santa is making me pay for half) and I was toying around with the idea of trying it. So, any opinions yay or nay? I also wanted to give Gentoo a try, but haven't because of the infamously long build time. It might be all right with a brand new 1.4Ghz 512 RAM. Anyone built Gentoo with a comperable machine? So, Gentoo, Arch Linux, talk, do coffee, no big whoop: |

I've recently installed Archlinux but for some reason having booting problems. I think it may be a bad cd burn that I did. I didn't check the MD5 sum when I burned the iso but now it seems to be a bad cd disc or something.
So i'm going to burn another copy and make sure its good, then give it another try. One thing you have to do is setup your basic configuration files, such as rc.local, lilo, fstab etc but just use a copy of a working linux files for a guide. Also you may want to check out LRs-Linux, its seems to be a pretty good looking new distro based on LFS! |
Arch is a great distro. It seems to have the best of 2 worlds = simplicity & a good, dependency resolving package manager

Well, I was predesposed to try it anyway, so that's all the encouragement I needed. I don't mind editing my own config files, now that I have the knowledge to do it. (Thanks to LFS, what a great learning experience!!) I also love the idea of the package manager called "pacman", I mean, how cool is that?

To get an idea what's Arch Linux and how well it works, if not yet tried, try "Arch Linux (AMLUG live 0.2) v0.5". If you like it, run "hd-install" and copy CD to your Hard Drive. Hwd-1.0 (hardware detect) search result of x-window and sound will also be copied to HD thereby having immediately a running Arch Linux with KDE-3.1.3, KOffice and Opera.

Thanks for the tip, but I have actually been using Arch quite happily now for six months. It's great.

But for those of us who haven't been.. ;) Sweet! Hope it's got a boot floppy to get the ball rolling..
Cool |

I have been using Arch exclusively since march this year. Allthough still quite the newbie (11 months using linux) Arch has worked well for me. It is simple, has nice package managment and a friendly community. Thats good enough for me. Oh, and the install is not that hard so don't let it scare you from trying.
