Anybody use Lycoris?
 

I'm considering using this OS as a server. I run a simple webserver from home for my website (www.compiledmonkey.com) and a few others. I'd probably try out the desktop features just for kicks. Have any of you guys tried this yet? How do you like it?

AMD, Lycoris as a server? Why not do a Grand Prix in a Mini Cooper? They're both daft ideas! Lycoris is, IMO, OK for a desktop setup where the user wants to be in Windows, but not running Windows, if you see what I mean. Of course you can use Lycoris as a server OS, but IIWY I would stick with more mainstream Linux distros, like RedHat, for your servers, and play with Lycoris (if you want) on the desktop, and never the twain shall mix.

Any real reasons to not use it? I respect opinions, but I don't see how RH is any less a desktop OS than Lycoris is.

No, that was my point. RH is a fine desktop, and Lycoris is, for some, a fine desktop, but I wouldn't want to run Lycoris as a server. Grantedly the last time I actually used Lycoris was quite a while ago, but I can't see that they would have changed their ethos too much... and I just didn't feel comfortable using something that tried to limit my control over the system.

Hey - no flame here...experimentation is one of the hallmarks of the Linux OS. Lycoris is designed for the newbie who wants a turn key desktop distro. This means minimal tweaking and more like MS. Not good or bad, just the way it is, a different market niche. For server work I think you will find one of the others (RH, Suse, Mandrake) more desirable because of their level of control and the fact that they (the distros) have more of an interface that allows you to do more with set-up etc. Each distro has its pros and cons. Kind of like tools...not bad, you just gotta find the right tool for the right job.

Hey guys, I respect the opinions. I think I'll stick with RH7.1 for now. I was considering upgrading the box to RH8 but don't see a huge need for it. The drive probably couldn't take it anyways. I wish I had a nice computer at home I could dedicate to Linux. I just picked up a second PC at work and installed RH8. I'm going to try and use that box more and more. :)

What do you mean a 'nice computer' :D I've got Linux running solely on a P-90 and on a PII-350. I still dual boot on my Athlon-1.4 due to the need to use a scanner (and to waste time playing games).
