Any reason to get Suse 9 Pro over Personal?
I'm going to buy Suse 9 tomorrow and was wondering if buying the professional version is worth the extra money? I have been using Linux for about two years, admin 5 Linux servers, have recompiled my kernels a thousand times, and generally feel confortable installing from source. The question is; if I get the personal version can I still install apps like apache and squid, postfix and mysql? Is the only difference between the two versions simply the extra books (don't need) and the inclusion on the installation disks of things like Apache? Or do I lose some cool features, or admin tools if I go with Personal?
Suse gurus please help.. This screems XP Pro vs. XP Homely. |
Go with Pro. You get the Nice DVD's to install from so you don't have to swap cd's. You also get all the software instead of having to download some of it from ftp servers. Not to mention having kernel 2.6 and the extra pay for them only software. Some video editing and such...

Thanks Caeda. Now I am definently leaning towards Pro. Those were both great reasons to go Pro. I hadn't considered the benefit of DVD media. And some cool video editors and the like would be nice. And it is for a good cause, supporting Novell (our knight against the SCO) and Suse, a decent distro which has done good things for Linux.
Are there any other differences between the two? |
Far more developement and server packages. Pro is the way to go. If you get the personal, you'll just feel like your missing something - and you'd be right. I had SuSE 8.0 personal and tho i was just starting out with linux, it wasn't long before I wished I had gone with pro. I use 8.2 pro and I am VERY happy with this distro.

Thanks. Pro it is then. Worse case is I save a bunch of bandwidth (downloading all the missing stuff) and support Novell/Suse. And I hear you get a kewl case sticker with the Pro. version. <oooo, aaaahhhh> :-)

thats the post i started a day before this one. i went out and bought personal, and it was a mistake. get pro...i like that you get a DVD with pro. i wish i got pro, but hey ! linuc is linux, and im happy. also, he personal version doesnt come with ANY kernels, not even the long talked about 2.6.x kernel which "can boot twice as fast". the problem i have now is i need to re-compile a kernel, and there is not a single kernel that comes with 9.0 personal, and im a bit upset. so now i need to configure a whole new kernel. where can i download the 2.6.x kernel for suse 9? or the stock 2.4.21-99SuSE kernel? |
The SuSE logo sticker is just amazing
I bought SuSE 9.0 pro 2 weeks ago I'm very happy with it. The administration guide convinced me. For me it was above all to get a complete box to install system with |
Yeah and i forget the dvd media GREAT
But i had to clean it with something cause there was some dust on it that makes the installation process to crash My intuition told me it was the dust and I was right Perhaps SuSE team should have placed the dvd somewhere else that in a paper case |
Hey i also had a DVD problem with my SuSE 9.0. The installation used to crash. Then I cleaned it with a cotton and the crash appeared at a different stage. So I took the DVD WASH IT IN WATER :o) And then it works fineTRue storyI wonder if this is a sticky chameleon sperm spot on their installation mediumsbut never seen a so stubborn dustAt least I'm very happy with SuSE 9.0

You can download the 2.6 kernel from http://kernel.org. I plan to do an immediate kernal recompile the second my Suse 9 Pro box arrives (currently in the midwest headed this way). I can't wait. The live eval worked flawlessly on my laptop (HP ze4230) and the machine below in my sig is the final destination. I hate being patient. Thanks go to all who convinced me to get the Pro.

now, in the future, if its not a M$ product, go Pro :-)

actually, im not s funny, lol, and i wasnt meaning to be. win xp pro is 100$ more than home, and the only difference is the securitt features, in which there's a loophole in xp home that will allow you to get the full features of xp pro. but yes, now that i have suse 9 personal, imm looking for a cheap pro, now that i see personal has no kernel, no MPlayer, no games (not any good ones), no programming tools, no emacs, almost nothing.
is there anywhere i can get suse 9 pro cheap...maybe under 10$. im not looking for ebay auctions, since ebay hasnt been very successul for me in the past few orders. a download site where i can get ISO images ? ftp install seems too compilecated, and im still a newbie. also, im looking for something more permanent. now i know suse 9 pro ships on dvds, is there any way to get a cd version ? |
Pro comes on DVD and cd - in the same box.
Pro has all the same stuff as Personal, plus it also has: full remote administration accounting software project management software desktop publishing software video conferencing a demo version of Main Actor 5 advanced development environment, compilers and tools apache server samba server and client dns server dhcp server nis server nfs server excellent 600 page administration guide test version of kernel 2.6 (2.4.21 is installed and has many of the same features as 2.6) and, yes, the Gecko sticker which now adorns my laptop. Definitely worth the money. :D |
lol. i also put the sticker on my laptop, lol. right on top of the gateway logo (not covering it).
and as i understand, do it also have kdevelop and emacs and other development tools ? and MPlayer ? as many people think, suse removed mp3 support...not true, its some KDE setting that messes MP3 up in xmms. go to the kde control center, and sound system, and uncheck the arts on startup checkbox, and you get mp3 support. as for the cds, where can i get some ISO images, or cheap copies ? |
