Any preference YDL 3.0 or Mandrake 9.1 PPC
I considering trying to run Linux on my ibook again. I previously had Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 in my ibook, but got frustrated with configuring it and wiped it. I've learned more and I'm going to try Linux on the ibook again. I was wondering if anyone has had good or bad experiences with either of these distros. YDL is PPC only, which is probably a plus, though I've ben getting familiar with Mandrake as of late...
Been runnin' YDL 3.0 since 4/03. My lan is all Apple all YDL. As a former user of the now defunct LinuxPPC version, I have had my experiences running linux on PPC going back to '99. Tried Mandrake and Debian and IMHO YDL is the way to go. I didn't encounter any real troublesome problems during the install and once it's running, you can use yum to keep your system up to date. And, like you said, its PPC only so if you get on their mailling list, you get PPC specific answers to any probs you may have.

if i decide to go the YDL route...???
Is there an easy way to get rid of the Mdk partition of without having to lose all of my Mac OS 9 data (partition).
To prep for Mdk, I wiped the HD clean then took some time to restore my Mac files. I'd prefer to not have to do it again, though I don't want current linux partitions to cause any conflicts...

Did you partition your drive during the Mandrake install to have a separate /, /usr, and /home?
If you did and I understand your situation correctly, you should be able to use the existing partition scheme and just intall YDL using it. Of course this is under the assumption that you will not be using Mandrake anymore on this machine.

I tried MandrakePPC for a few days, but it wasn't behaving itself on my ibook. I reinstallled YDL 3.0 and it works great. Except Tux Racer is *way* too choppy...

while i have you here... :)
do u know how i can setup kppp so it doesn't keep asking for a pwd? i logged-in as root and thought i set kppp permissions for all to use it, but i could be wrong...
also, i keep trying to use 'yum,' but keep getting bumped after listing updates for so long. i'm hoping that a new version of gaim has MSN service!
finally, i also tried to download some new kde themes and icons (rpm's) but couldn't get them to work. the pkg appears to be ok, but kde can't find a valid theme or icon file there..
any more advice?
update (edit): kppp is giving me a bigger headache now! if my dialup line gets dropped, the modem remains "busy." i try to reset it, but its just busy. i hafta restart to get anywhere! even worse, now after kppp dials in, it doesn't stay in the taskbar, and the entire panel (?) is disabled, though it remains connected.
