The next step after setting a working Slackware or Arch box, is setting a working Crux box...

IMHO, Crux ( will try it one of these days ) is the uberKISS approach to a Linux distro...

think of a "skinny" Arch... and there are some differences... like the ports system...

I am in the process of searching for an Ubuntu alternative. I've tested a few distros on VM, but with over 600 choices, it's hard to say if I've found what I'm looking for.

I do have some criteria for any suggestions:

-Prefer a Debian-based distro
-User-friendly
-Prefer friendly installation of popular non-free codecs-- flash, .mp3, etc.
-Independent from corporate sponsorship-- no Novell, Canonical, etc.
-I would like my iPod to work

Here are the distro's I've tested, but have decided not to use-- openSUSE, Linux Mint, Debian. If I must choose one of these it won't be the end of the world, but they had a few quirks I wasn't thrilled with.
I believe Debian Squeeze would be the most proper alternative to Ubuntu.
