After Multiple Installs, Can't Get Into KDE or GNome GUIs

After having a successful install of SuSE 9.1 Pro, and getting into KDE with no problems... I now cannot get into KDE or Gnome. It has the boot screen then ends in a prompt asking for my user name and password. Once entered, Linux stays at the prompt.

Sorry for being new.. I didn't understand the errors when I styped startx or startkde....

For some reason.. it seemed like the first time the problem hit was when I updated and rebooted.. but now it has happened after a reinstall.. a completely new partition setup and install and a third reinstall... any reason I shouldn't get into a GUI?

Comp Setup:
Dual Part w/ 2K... Hauppauge WinTV Card, 2 Nics, NVidia GeForce 5200... That should be all that would affect the set up.

Ok.. thanks.

Its not a problem that you are new, but could you please post the errors so we can see them? We cannot help you if you do not provide enough information.

The Error...

Ok... I typed startkde and got the error that I will post in a moment... but when I typed startx... it actually started. I have typed it every time I have booted without success and for it to work now seems odd to me... but I booted into a GUI... I do not know if it will work again... but I would still like to get into the kde.. (or is there no difference?)

ok...

startkde
xset: unable to open display""
xset: unable to open display""
xset: unable to open display""
xsetroot: unable to open display""
xset: unable to open display""
xset: unable to open display""
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.

KSMServer: Cannot connect to X Server
Startkde: Shutting Down...
Warning: Connect () Failed: : No such file or directory.
Error: Can't Contact KDEinit!
StartKDE: Running Shutdown scripts...
Startkde: Done.

Back to prompt.

Oh... and I a Linux Guru told me to type Sax2 in the command prompt... I did... but now even Startx doesn't work.. the monitor flixs off and displays a message:

"Out of Range, No Sync"

Thanks.
