A question on Knoppix

Hi folks,

Knoppix 4.0

Please advise how to start Knoppix as Root instead of User. Because;

1)
avoidng "su" to mount HD

2)
Applications can't read files in mounted partitions, unless they were started as Root (i.e. after su).

Running
# mount /dev/xyz /mnt/xyz
# mount -o remount,rw /mnt/xyz

Did not solve the problem.

TIA

B.R. and Happy New Year.

1) are you internet or networked connected to be concerned by su?

2) Knoppix allows right hand click the partitions to change to read/write or used the su command.....in theory you applications should then run

Hi aus9,

Tks for your advice.

I suppose the Internet was connected as Root because in network connection only Root can be allowed. But I did it on the desktop menu "ADSL Connection". Therefore I'm not 100% sure whether Root or User.

Now on running following command to mount the partition as Root
# mount -o users /dev/xyz /mnt/xyz

I can download files from Internet to the mounted partition /dev/xyz.

But I'm still looking for a way starting Knoppix as Root not as User, if possible. So on terminal I can edit the files downloaded directly without "su" because the owner of some files being Root.

check out a root only knoppix here
http://www.knoppix-std.org/faq.html

I have not tried it but it appears to be runlevel 3 (command line interface) so should suit you?

With your post count I am just advising others to be very careful of using a root connected system.

good luck

Hi aus9,

Tks for your link,

If I can boot Knoppix (I.m now using V.4, kernel 2.6.7) straight to runlevel 3 instead of runlevel 5. From there boot runlevel 5 after login as Root. Then I'll get connected to Root environmnet on runlevel 5. I'm not aware how to make it on Knoppix without a bootloader popup during booting . I'll search Internet later for suggestion, if any.

I run Knoppix as host to build LFS --> BLFS. I need booting it to runlevel 5 as Root. Tks.

Hi aus9,,

Further to my late posting I got my problem solved with cheatcodes.

During booting at command prompt, typed "knoppix 3" and entered. It booted straight to runlevel 3 as Root. Then from there I started runlevel 5 as Root.

Thanks again for your assistance.
