A Linux Distro that runs off of CD?????
I know there is already a post out there that has this but I have been looking for it for a couple of hours now and can't find it....My problem here is I am looking for a Linux that boots and runs off of CD without the need of installation.....My mother wants to tinker with linux but doesn't want to install it and I heard about this but I don't know where to look Please Help.....if posible is there a version with a working gui like gnome or other...

it would be called Knoppix
well there are many out there, but i assume thats
the one your referring to, as its the most popular
mentioned distro on a cd.

and you can easily grab the cd image at

Knoppix and Gnoppix are two of the most popular distros to run from a CD.

Make sure you've got a fast CD drive!

Knoppix, Gnoppix, Morphix (4 flavors for ya), Mepis, MandrakeMove, PCLinuxOS, Slax, Damn Small Linux....that's off the top of my head.

My top recommendations are Knoppix, Mepis, and PCLinuxOS

Suse 9.1 live cd is available now as well.

There's alot of them out there, Iv'e tried a handful of them, knoppix, slax, knoppix.std, and a couple others I can't think of right now.
But knoppix is the one you probably want to check out first, good hardware detection, loads of software and a good gui.

thanx I think I'll try knoppix since its on everybodys list now All I have to do is have my brother down load it he has cable it wont take 60 hrs for him

BTW, PCLinuxOS is releasing a new version, running on the 2.6 kernel very soon (as in days), and for the FreeBSD fans out there, there's a live cd release called FreeSBIE. I downloaded it last night. Spiffy!

And for the braver of us (not me ;)) you could create your own. Do a search of LQ, links to the site have been posted in the past.

For a list and links to some of the live cd based distros:

If you have any problems with knoppix booting up:

try SuSe live evals! All you do is download and burn the ISO!

Ty all I just got Knoppix it seems good a little cluttered but good however I do have to do an interactive startup just to use the mouse though

You might be able to save your settings to a USB key or a small file on the hard drive. I know that Mepis does that, and it was one of the first spinoffs of the Knoppix cd. Good luck. BTW, if you want less clutter, try the Slax cd (or FreesBie ;))
