100% and no network

I have a little problem.

Every now and again the CPU maxes out and my Internet (network) connection becomes temporarily crippled! I can't make out which processes it maxing out the CPU either, it just doesn't show up...?

My Internet connection comes in through Ethernet, I'm using Debian Unstable and Kernel 2.6.5.

I have another Debian unstable installation, both are similar but not exactly the same, yet the other has no problems.

Any ideas?

How often does this happen? Does it appear to be any pattern that you can detect? Have you run terminal session with 'top' running when this occurs? Does top report that your processor is pegged at 100% utilization (if not how do you determine that the CPU is maxed, simply lack of responsiveness)? If so does it not show a process or processes that account for this?

Are you online every time this occurs? By any chance do these lags seem to correlate to times when your system might be making name resolutions?

...sorry! I seemed to have posted this twice my mistake - thought I'd posted it to Debian forum, couldn't see it so re-posted when I had more info. Here's the updated post:

Quote:

no IPv6 routers present

I have a little problem.

Every now and again the CPU maxes out and my Internet (network) connection becomes temporarily crippled!

dmesg my friend has given me something to work with. It seems that each time the CPU maxes out this line:

quote:eth1: no IPv6 routers present

appears in dmesg.

It seems that the reason I have no network is that it's going nuts transmitting packets.

Anyone know how I can solve this?

My Internet connection comes in through Ethernet (eth1), I'm using Debian Unstable and Kernel 2.6.5. I have another Debian unstable installation, both are similar but not exactly the same, yet the other has no problems.

To answer your questions: gnome-system-monitor and top indicate that the processor maxes out, but there is no process accepting responsibility (updated post should explain things however). There does seem to be a pattern, if surfing the net or not.

Thanks for the reply.
