How can I install SuSE 8.1 using ADSL?

A better way is to download all the files and install from HD. The bindwidth of ADSL is too narrow , when you install by using ADSL, you will waiting for a very long time. And if you are not fortunately, the installing progress will be paused. Download all the files needed by installer and burning a boot cdrom, then you can do what you will do.

And how can i know which are the files needed by the installer?

I would suggest that you start up the installlation and see how it progresses. See what kinds of speeds you achieve. I tried the SuSE 8.1 network install and was achieving install download speeds of around 700Kb/s. At that speed, the installation process still took about one hour for about a 2.4Gb package collection install.

I would suggest that you only download the absolute minimum components if in doubt about your ADSL speed. Then add any other packages later if you REALLY need them.

FYI - I installed SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake on my notebook and compared the speed of all of them. Opening windows, opening new programs, copying files, etc. SuSE was SIGNIFICANTLY slower than RH and Mandrake.

To answer your first question:
- go to the SuSE site
- find a mirror and download the boot iso file
- burn the iso onto a disk
- boot up your computer with the boot disk
- work through the options and connect
- check the IP of your ftp site
eg 217.9.113.66 (this is the ftp.suse site)
eg 192.42.62.2 (this is an ftp mirror in Australia)
- for the directory setting enter
"/pub/suse/i386/8.1
- then you should be away! Then hope your speed is OK.

Well, finally I'm using SuSE 8.1.
I installed the distro from my HD. To select the archives to download I entered to SuSE FTP and downloaded the files in:

'/i386/8.1/suse/setup/descr'

in these files there are a list of the archives you need to download depending of the things you want to install. I select carefully what files I need, then copy and paste them to a .txt, and with that text (alphabetical ordered) I started to choose and download the files.
When all was finished I installed SuSE 8.1 with no problems.

Note: don't forget to download k_deflt*.rpm this is the kernel and is not included in the descriptions files. Also the 42MB file 'root' on the boot dir is needed.

Note2: To make the HD install you must make your install dir as the ftp dir is. So copy the sames dirs (not necessary with all the contents) of the ftp to the HD.

Do you think SuSE is slower than other distros?

Absolutely not. I have intalled Mandrake 8.2 a couple months ago just to test it, and it's was significantly slower than the SuSE 7.1 that is installed in the same computer.
Now I'm using SuSE 8.1 with the Reiser File System. I can't complaint about the perfomance, i'm very happy with it.
