.xsessionrc makes start-up fail

When I have this as my .xsessionrc file (in home directory of user):
nvidia-settings -l
it works.
When I added a second line:
nvidia-settings -l
it booted up normally, until the user's X-session started. It would display a (responding) mouse cursor and nothing more. What's up here? Can't I put graphical applications here? Then where can I?

Then where can I?
Try on the ~/.Xresources.

Thanks for the suggestion. But, IIUC that is called even before xsessionrc and is mainly used for setting "resources". Also it's very cryptic. So I'm not sure I'll spend time deciphering it, unless I get some positive confirmation on this particular subject.
