Xorg crashing with nvidia-legacy-drivers

I forgot to include essential details....
OS: Gentoo 2.6.16-r9
Video card: nVidia e-GeForce 6200
I would also post my xorg.conf, but I have no way to do it other than to retype it into this box. I'll post requested segments of the file, though.

In order to emerge wine, I had to update xorg-x11. After having updated it and all the packages on which it is dependent, it would not work. I re-emerged nvidia-legacy-drivers, but it resulted in different nvidia kernel and nvidia driver versions, which would not work. I recompiled my kernel in order to ensure that the nvidia kernel would also be updated, and this is no longer a problem. Now, whenever I try to startx or run xdm, it results in it only going as far as the nvidia logo, then crashing with these abnormal messages:

Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x84) [0x80c6304]
1: /lib/libpthread.so.0 [0xb7f4cc65]
2: [0xffffe420]
3: X(main+0x2a8) [0x806dd68]
4: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0x15) [0xb7d11565]
5: X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x8d) [0xB06d9b1]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Does anyone know what this problem could be?

login as root and execute this command:
X -configure

this should create a new file for your xorg.conf

Assuming that that is the same as xorgconfig, it solves nothing. The problem is clearly deeper than one within the configuration file.

Why are you using legacy drivers with a 6200?
