Xorg crashes with backtrace or freezes

Strange how it happened, I just restarted and it wouldn't go. I execute startx on my slackware box as usual: If I leave the mouse still when it's starting up it freezes and my desktop stares at me begging for reboot; if I move it around, it returns to console with the following output:

Code:

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

xmodmap:  unable to open file '/root/.Xmodmap' for reading
xmodmap:  1 error encountered, aborting.
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Looks like I need to reinstall X because of some freak error, but I'd like to hear from the experts ;). Many thanks in advance.

Follow the suggestion of reading the Xorg.0.log file. An error listed may point to the problem.

Sorry, forgot that.

The last line has a very odd physical size. It is very small and AFAIK, should be a multiple of 8 or 16 for X and 4 for Y. Could you check your xorg.conf file. What modes do you have? You should also post your xorg.conf file. Since you are having a problem with the mouse, the mouse section could be enlightening.

It's not just the mouse that freezes, I believe it's the whole system. And this is the default slackware-13.0 xorg.conf I've always used and had no need to modify. I use conky and xcompmgr on startup, I'll try to start up after disabling them and get back to you.

Seem to be working now...all I did was start fluxbox from another user, seen that all was well, then it worked for all users. Funny glitch...might this have to do with me using X with root?

Generally, using X as "root" is discouraged as a security risk. (The risk is, of course, much higher if you connect to the Internet whilst using X as "root.")

You could see if adding a server flag to enable the "AllowEmptyInput" would make a difference. (See man xorg.conf for details.) The Xorg.0.log file you posted did have a warning about that flag, but the warning is common and usually of no significance.

Restarting a a different user will have reset the X-server socket, so, perhaps, the problem was that "root" was attempting to re-use a dead socket.
