XMMS producing garbled song titles on mp3's (and others?)

I compiled xmms myself on zenwalk 3.0 and everything compiled fine (I think). The only problem i've been having with it, is it reads the song titles of about 1/12th (exactly! hehe) of my mp3s as complete gobble-dee gook. I shall post examples for reference and for humor

Song: Insurrection (Blue Gator)
Artist: Dub is a Weapon
XMMS Shows: bi epn - sreto leGtr320

Song: How the doctor relaxes
Artist: Grimy Styles
XMMS Shows: iySye - wteDco eae

Song: Kung Fu Champion
Artist: Hiromi
XMMS Shows: rm - n uCapo

Song: Xerox Gravity Waves
Artist: Infected Mushroom
XMMS Shows: fce uhom - rxGaiyWvs

Song: Densu
Artist: Osibisa
XMMS Shows: iia - nu

I think you get the point
While some of them produce some pretty entertaining names, i have been searching for other cases of this bug (it appears to just be leaving characters out), and have been unable to find any. I would be suprised to find out this bug was specific to my build (especially since it does it to only a small portion of the songs on my playlist).
It's fairly harmless but still annoying to an OS perfectionist!

any ideas?

love and light

[can someone move this into the generic Linux - Software category since that seems to get more viewers and responses? ]

You're right! I encountered the same problem on my machine. I'm using Slackware 11.0, which is the base for Zenwalk.
I figured out, that it only occurs, when editing the id3-tags with amarok. Maybe some problem with id3v2 or taglib.
