XDG_DATA_DIRS not always set in XFCE 4.10.1-8/Debian Jessie

Good day,

I'm having a problem on XFCE 4.10.1-8, under Debian Jessie. I'm writing a script in which I check the value of XDG_DATA_DIRS. At first everything worked fine. Lately, XDG_DATA_DIRS has not been set. I removed .cache/xfce*/ which solved the problem once only.

I searched via google, but everything I could find was about what values should be used if the variable is not set, no reasons as to why it would not be set.
