X-server restarts when using glx

Hi. I'm fairly new at using linux and I've encountered a problem.

Whenever I try to use any program that uses glx, my X server restarts.

ie google earth, glxinfo, glxgears, etc

I can't even post a copy of glxinfo because X-restarts every time I try to run glxinfo. Everything was working fine a few weeks ago, and I'm not sure what I did to break glx.

Is there any way to get the output from glxinfo when X crashes?

I have a PCI nvidia card : 01:07.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

and lsmod gives
Code:
 lsmod |grep nvidia
nvidia 6820404 16
agpgart 27240 1 nvidia
i2c_core 17536 3 saa7134,ir_kbd_i2c,nvidia
my xorg.conf has :
Code:
Section "Module"
    Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension
Load "v4l" # Video for Linux
    Load "extmod"
    Load "type1"
    Load "freetype"
    Load "glx" # 3D layer
EndSection

...

Section "Device"
    Identifier "device1"
    BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce FX (generic)"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Screen 0
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "device2"
    VendorName "nVidia Corp."
    BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce FX (generic)"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Screen 0
    BusID "PCI:1:7:0"
EndSection

...

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "screen1"
    Device "device1"
    Monitor "monitor1"
    DefaultDepth 24
...

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite"
EndSection

looking at /var/log/syslog All I can find is

Apr 5 15:47:36 localhost mdkapplet[4352]: System is up-to-date
Apr 5 15:47:43 localhost kdm[4167]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

Downloaded the latest NVIDIA drivers from nvidia.com and installed them.
