Windows and system tray items refuse to use primary monitor.

I recently have setup my desktop with two monitors. I have them setup and have designated monitor 1 as Primary. The issue is when I open up windows they always open to my secondary monitor. These I can move to primary and then they open/close on primary. Every new program will open on secondary. Also, when I try to adjust the volume on my system, the audio mixer opens on secondary monitor.

Here is a screenshot of the audio mixer in action.

I am not sure where to go to fix this but I do appreciate you taking the time to read my post.

If you are using the extend desktop mode, check the correct allignment. It seems programmes remember which window they opened on lastandjust do that again. I always unplug hdmi and when i plug it in again everything defaults to primary.

Extend left or right should sort out tak bar

I tried looking for those settings and I could not find them. As usual, internet search engines are not giving me good results when trying to find it that way.

I did try the suggested step of unplugging and re-plugging in the monitor to the computer. That has fixed the window issue when popping up on second monitor but the sound menu is still showing on the secondary monitor. One item that I didn't mention in my first post is that I am using my nvidia graphics card with a proprietary driver. The link below contains the screen shot of my nvidia monitor settings for both the primary and secondary monitors. I put the hardware list inside there as well.

Once again, thank you for your help!

On the nvidea centre or windows settings click on a screen and drag it to the opposite side

While I could do that (and I did test that just to be sure), It then has my monitor on the wrong side.

My primary monitor is in front of me and the secondary one is to the left. If I switched them, I would have to go off the screen to the right to get to my left monitor.

Essentially, I just cannot figure out why my volume controls appear on the second monitor instead of the primary where they are supposed to be.

Is there any more information I can give from my system to help troubleshoot this issue?

Thank you for your post.

Nope. Try using the windows tool to setup. Not the nvidea tools. I am pretty sure the lasttime i used windows there was an option to select the primary and then to extend to left or right.

If all else fails just switch the physical monitors around. That is not so difficult to do.

Not sure if this will shed some light but usually the Primary Monitor is designated as Monitor 0

And the secondary monitor is Monitor 1

I haven't used Xorg.conf for quite a few years but....

in xorg.conf use " Monitor 1 Right-of Monitor 0 " in your argument

with Xrandr you would have this :

Exec=xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900 --rate 59.9 --output LVDS1 --mode 1366x768 --rate 60.0 --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1

where xrandr puts the VGA screen on the right side of the lappy's screen

Good luck
