Right... further to this, I've installed MATE and am running this with no problem whatsoever. No loss of GUI apparati, quick and solid. So, simple answer: stay with MATE on the desktop. Cinnamon clearly has issues somewhere, and I've got a few projects I need to focus on, so re-installing Cinnamon isn't in the cards. This does not constitute a [Problem Solved] so I won't mark this thread as [SOLVED].
