Window going straight to maximize and losing max and min buttons

An old problem that has appeared. I am losing my maximize and minimize buttons. Getting rid of desk top effects and Compiz, nor changing window decoration help. Anybody go any ideas on curing this problem which has started since I upgraded to Jaunty with Kubuntu. Got rid of it in Hardy by deleting desk top effects, not this time and I cannot seem to find a 'cure'.

Make sure you are using kwin as the window manager, then click on the icon to the top left corner (click there even if there is no icon) and you should see that maximise has a checkmark in it. Remove the check mark. Also in compiz config settings manager make sure you have the option to resize maximised windows checked.

Still no luck finding those buttons

Tried making sure Kwin was window manager and checking/unchecking maximise in Compiz and still the same. Buttons appear for about 5 or so seconds and then disappear. Very odd must be something simple and i am just not seeing it - or in the case of the buttons not seeing it!
