Will iPod Touch work with Linux?

I have thought about getting an ipod touch. But, I am not sure how much the functionality would be crippled by using Linux, instead of MacOS, or Windows.

For example, would I be able to transfer mp3s from my Linux desktop, to the iTouch, or would I need iTunes?

I don't know about ipod touch as I've got ipod classic. As far as music is concerned, it works fine with gtkpod.

Others also use amarok to transfer music to their ipod.

I haven't tried transferring videos, though.

No, currently the iTouch does not work. I bought mine only to find, I have to keep a win pc, just to update my itouch. Sucks. The iPod classic, Nano, and shuffle should work without problems.

iTouch sort of works with linux, but in my experience (1-2 years ago), it was very hard work.

It needs to be "Jailbroken" before it'll work with linux.

I eventually got mine running, then something broke, and then it no longer worked with linux.

Then I "bricked" it. Then I managed to "un-brick" it. It still works with windows, but I never run that now.

When it did work with linux, it was better than windows (eg I could upload music wirelessly to it when it was still in the car :)

Now I don't use it, and will never buy Apple stuff again.

YMMV.

I agree, sort of. I've got an iPhone, and it's in the same boat with the iTouch, as far as Linux support goes. iPods work great, either with GTKpod or Amarok, but not the 'touch' devices.

The only reason I have iTunes on my gaming rig, is for loading music/videos on my iPhone. I use MobileME for my calendar/mail/contacts, so I don't worry about backing them up....

This has been an interesting thread.

The bottom line is perhaps, "If you want to use Apple hardware, consider yourself locked in to Apple".

Forever.

Personally, I don't like that.
No. No. Noooo!

So I will not do it again, but the iTouch was a gift, and clever, pretty and sleek though it is it is useless to me.

Where is the OP, walterbyrd for this thread and his opinion(s)?

I am disappointed. As much as I like linux, it seems I constantly running into brick walls - this doesn't work, that doesn't work.

Sadly, when it comes to proprietary vendor lock-in, Apple seems to be just as bad as Microsoft.

It is odd that Apple does not have iTunes for Linux.
Mac OS-X is based on Darwin and is closer to Linux than to Windows.
