you clearly haven't met many 8-year olds, and haven't seen SCRATCH and its GUI.
he has a command of the his native language both written and orally at 8, and shows an interest in learning whatever to fill his brain, then, if that is a yes, then it would not matter what or which Linux distro you get him. Just get one then install the programming language you want to teach him then go from there. He will learn how to adapt to it. That is a part of Human nature.
at 8 years old I'd hardly think you would keep his interest in learning programming. I'd let him use Linux to play games and watch his favorite video etc.. then maybe later around 10 - 12 start showing him how he can change things by programming or config files and all of that neat stuff, that would give you time if you do not know it already to beef up on it so you'll be that super know it all dad.
Thanks for the inputs. I think my job now is to make her aware of the possibilities and allow her to choose what interests her. Yes, of course, she spends lots of time playing games and watching vids, but I want to perk up her curiosity in the beauty that is in Linux and its applications.
If she wants to try out something now, great - I'm there to guide her...if her interest is more in other things, thats also fine...we shall wait till the time is ripe :-)
