Does anyone know how to get the Compiz burn effect? Half of the Compiz animations that used to be available are now missing. The only distro that I've been able to use the burn effect on is Cylon Linux because it's available and enabled by default. I really want to have this on Ubuntu and Linux Mint, but it doesn't seem to be available. Any ideas? I really want my windows to burst into flames when I close them!

In the fusion icon at settings manager
effects > paint fire on the screen
you can check it and click on it
there is the initiate and clear key combinations
and you can enable initiation there
they are disabled by default

Is this what you're after?
perhaps not as I vaguely remember a much grander effect

I just found what you want.
In the fusion icon at settings manager > Effects > Animations >
Close Animation > Animation Selection click on the first one
In the pop-up window > Close Effect choose: Burn
The timing can be increased for longer enjoyment.

Animations Add-on has to be enabled as well.

That's exactly what I did! There are a few animations, but no burn effect. The only distro that I can get the burn effect on is Cylon, which I had downloaded a while back. Was this thing just discontinued?

the compiz version I use is 0.9.7.12
it is from the ubuntu 12.04 precise-updates repository
I have folowing files installed that would contain the burn effect:
compiz-plugins
compiz-plugins-default
compiz-plugins-extra
compiz-plugins-main
compiz-plugins-main-default
animations and animation add-on are both enabled

if you have a newer version of ubuntu it may well be different
the latest version now is: 0.9.10
perhaps you could downgrade to the precise version
libdecorations0 needs also downgrading and possibly some others as well

it had happened before that I needed to downgrade to a previous version
of compiz 0.8.4 because something was stuffed up with the shipped one,
but this version 0.9.7.12 is all good.
first: all the compiz related files need to be un-installed
then all the downgrades need to be installed one by one
to find out what else needs downgrading
a warning though: dependency hell will rob your time in working it all out
the downgrading of some common lib files may un-install other apps as well
so after wasting a lot of time you may still end up in a dead end street

Alright, I was able to get it working on Ubuntu 12.04 (Virtual Machine) after reinstalling the packages. I'm still trying to get it in Linux Mint 15 Xfce, my main distro, but I only have the raring repositories. What is the URL of that precise-updates repository you mentioned so I can add it to Synaptic Package Manager?

OK the entry in /etc/apt/sources.list in my case for Australia would be:

deb http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu/ precise-updates main universe

as most of the packages for compiz are in the main section and some extras in the universe section.

This may cause some suggested updates if the mint versions are different. It would be wise to ignore those updates as they may cause chaos as I experienced with Knoppix 7; and that without adding any repos at all. In fact once you have the compiz packages you could disable this repository again by adding # in front of the line.

There are another 300+ repository mirrors around the world and some may be speedier for you. Where are you based at? And an unrelated question; do you play the saxophone? If so call in at Rylstone, NSW, Australia and ask for Rolf if you happen to be nearby.

It's very curious that re-installing the same compiz packages would make the burn effect possible. I'm a real compiz fan, so much that I made up a new computer with dual core intel CPU, 8 GB RAM and SSD on a mini-PC mother board. Wow, what a difference to my 11 year old laptop; ever so snappy now.

I got inspired to use the burn effect myself now. Thanks for the "suggestion". I enjoy it. Let me know how you're going with mint.

I tried adding that repository and some of the Ubuntu precise repositories, but I think I severely stuffed up my system. Synaptic package manager kept comming up with errors about not finding any packages. I tried to load the default repo list into /etc/apt/sources.list to get synaptic working again, but this did not fix anything. When I tried to open up Synaptic, it would just close right away. Software Manager doesn't open up at all. I also just got this serious login bug again that locks me out of my desktop. When I get to the login screen, I choose my username, type in my password, and press Enter. The desktop starts to load, but then returns to the login screen after a second. I've tried starting X from the tty, but to no effect. I've had this bug before, but it went away on its own somehow. Do you know how I can fix all of this? My system is so stuffed up, it's unusable! Mint 15's stability is so awful it's making me think about downgrading! I just don't know what it is with me and this burn effect. I just love it so much seeing windows burn up!

Yes, the warning was there. Mint is a mix of Debian derived and in-house software and I can see the risk in that. It looks like mint doesn't tolerate any outside repos. I can't help you with this mix up; seems too many issues. If that happened to me I would not waste a second trying to fix anything. I would use a puppy CD and recover any valuable data, then wipe it all out and start again installing something different.
I use Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm not interested in updating to any of the newer versions. This has long term support LTS. In April 2014 there will be the next LTS 14.04. I spent a lot of time tweaking my system to come close to the gnome 2 desktop, similar to mate. It's called gnome classic or gnome-session-fallback. I made an ISO that will fit on a 4 GB flashdrive and it is available at :

You also need to read Installation-Graphics-and-Tweaks.txt before the installation.
And the present versions is called 4CLIX-7.1.4.1 for 64-bit PCs.

Thanks, I'll definitely try those. I like the Gnome 2 desktop a lot. I think I'm just going to backup, wipe, and downgrade to Mint 13 LTS which seems like it will be a great deal more stable than 15 and will be supported all the way up to April 2017. It also uses the "precise" repositories so I can get my burn effect . Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. You seem to know a lot about this stuff!

I agree the gnome 2 desktop is my favourite too. You know there is no shame in downgrading. In fact it is a smart thing to do.
Just imagine what pressure these developers have in continuously having to create a new version of an OS. Even Microsoft are bringing out new versions more often then before.
XP was a great OS and so is 7, whereas Vista was a lemon and many were unhappy with the way 8 went and now so shortly after they've done 8.1. So it is happening in the commercial world too. But MS beside; most of all I'm a dedicated Linux fan and a lot I know is from other Tux nerds on forums like this one. Many thanks to all the help I got over the years. Some real bad frustrations were alleviated that way.

That's another good reason why not upgrading to newer OS versions. I use apt-mirror to download the whole precise repository to an external HDD; dozens of gigabytes of software at my fingertips. And when precise is dead I can still install it's software.
compiz is very demanding and it needs a good computer and graphics card to run it well. As mentioned above I invested in a new computer to enjoy apps like compiz. I also love a burning window like camthesaxman.
