Question Want to enable 3D desktop effects using ATI radeaon 200m

I installed PCLinuxOS on a Toshiba Satellite S2101 with a radeon 200m express card
I love the OS but the most i can get to work is the transparency effects.

I have crashed my system twice trying to enable 3d desktop (beryl or compiz)after downloading the ATI first party drivers it.
had to reinstall.

if i type beryl into the command line
the display get garbled and the x window resets.

I am currently using the open source drivers which came with the os.

Should i even bother to download the ATI drivers again?

has anybody gotten beryl to work using a radeon xpress card?

I hope i can get simple instructions.. i'm not a newb but not a too high level either
3d or not i'm still loving the penguin! lol.

I also have a radeom express 200 card. I downloaded the ati linux drivers from the ati site and the 3d acceleration works.

Beryl didn't work for me either, It crashed just like you said.

compiz worked but it is a little slow with my 1.6 ghz computer, you can try it out and see if it works for you.

Compiz is like beryl with less effects.

Good Luck!

Beryl on ATI

I have Beryl installed on my Tower and on my laptop, both have ATI cards. I followed the instructions on this website to the letter. (http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_fei...ryl_ati_radeon) My Tower is an old Dell GX260, 2.4ghz, 1Gr, ATI R9550 rv350 w/256Mddr. Works great except I would like to know how to tweak Beryl. My laptop is a Dell Latitude C610 1.2Ghz, 512Mr, An ATI 16Mr mobility radeon M6 LV. I have the colour set to 16M and the resolution set to 1024x768. I have the 3d cube without caps (displayed white) and with a skydome. I turn the caps off and let the skydome shine thru. It works on both sets really good on the Tower, but it is pushing the laptop's card to the limit. I can only open 2 or 3 windows or appz before it slows everything to a halt. Good Luck, Darrell

I recently went through this with a Radeon Mobility x1300. I don't know how helpful it will be, but you can track my successful progress, and a tutorial, by going here ->

Maybe you will find something useful to your situation.
