Using keyboard hotkeys in KDE with two monitors

Hi all

I've set up a twin monitor system using two graphics cards. It is setup aas two desktops with their own icons and taskbar. When I first setup the hotkeys using KMenuEdit they only worked on the second display and I was unable to get them working at all on the main display. I then installed lineak and set the keys as I wanted them. Now They work on the main display but if I'm using the second display I get a different response. For example I have the Sleep key set to log out but if I press it when using the second display the session is locked. Another example is the Favorites key which I have setup to start a program, when I press it when using the second monitor the bookmarks editor starts up. If I use KMenuEdit to set the key to the program I want to start and run lineak at the same time sometimes the program will start and some times the bookmark editor will start when using the second display. Over the last couple of days I've several ways to resolve this but nothing has been a compolete success. Has anyone any ideas of how to solve this.

TIA

Stewart

Hi Stewart

I also have a dual head setup, and have run two different desktops for a few months.

After a while, somebody suggested using only one big desktop spanned over the two monitors. Reluctantly, I tried it, and I am still using it years after! KDE knows how to handle a spanned desktop. the windows know the boundaries between the monitors, and you can drag windows from one monitor to the other. Taskbar is also aware of the boundaries between monitors and can be configured to only show windows from the current monitor.

I suggest you give it a try too!

I also had it spanning the two monitors for awhile but it caused some problems which I could not fix. The main one was that when I started a program maxmized it would spill over on to the second screen. Clicking the maximize button maximized it on to the main screen. Also if a dialog was displayed quite often it would appear in the center of the total desktop i.e. in the split between the two or on the extended part on the second monitor. As I don't always have the second monitor on it caused some problems. Other than these two thing I liked the 'spanned' desktop a lot.

Turn of xinerama in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and that will solve those things

Here is my "ServerLayout" section of xorg.conf

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Multihead layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" LeftOf "Screen1"
Screen 1 "Screen1" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
Option "Xinerama" "off"
Option "Clone" "off"
EndSection

Unfortunately none of this fixed the problem using the hotkeys. I've decided to revert to two desktops and live with the keys as they are. Thanks for your help with this.
