Used space is more than volume size?

If I select right-click > properties for a volume (external hd) in Nautilus, it says that 285GB is used, while the volume size is 279.4GB - and 2.3GB is free.

A df -h says 264G is used. The partition is 300 gig in size, which doesn't really help much given the reduction from having a filesystem, but presumably the df output is most likely to be correct.

Is Nautilus somehow counting the file sizes wrongly when it scans the volume?

im not familiar with nautilus myself (i run KDE) could it perhaps be following symbolic links and counting them towards the partition?
do you have any?

Aha :) Yeah there are a number of symlinks on the drive - I think thats what it is. Should've thought of that!

Thanks :)
