Upgraded F8 to F10 - Lost KDE Settings

Thanks to all of you who help out here. It's often a great resource for me without needing to post...

I recently used the preupgrade method to take my linux box from F8 to F10. It was incredibly smooth, and the system is up and running fine.

But one thing did not happen as I expected: All of my customization for the task manager, panels, and clock were not maintained. I'm reasonably confident that whatever definition file(s) that had been used to store this information did not get erased; probably just replaced. I'm likely to have a backup, in any event.

Unfortunately, I did all of that setup of wallpapers, fonts, icons, etc. almost two years ago. My soft brain can't recall how I did it all, and where the various key items are stored. I'd like to avoid doing it all over again, if possible.

So my questions are:

1) Where would the old settings be?
2) Is there a more operational reason that they were not maintained as default (e.g., KDE 4 needs to use different schema and it could not be imported)?
3) How should I proceed to bring back my comfortable desktop environment?

Once again, thank you for all your posts!
Tom

Your user settings are usually in hidden files/directories in your home directory.

I believe a KDE version has changed between f8 and f10...

I appreciate the reply. I guess I should have been more clear:

I know that KDE was upgraded in the process, which is why I wondered if therein may be the reason why my settings were replaced. Also, I know that these settings reside in hidden folders within my home directory, which is why I mentioned that my home directory appears to be in tact.

The problem for me is that the .kde directory in my home directory includes 523 files within 190 subfolders. I am hoping that someone with KDE experience can help me with the previous questions (i.e., where in .kde folder might I find the file or files responsible for these settings).

Thanks!
Tom

For the benefit of anyone else looking for similar solutions...I figured out that I had a much larger problem: KDE was not fully installed. Here's a link that shows how I solved that:

I haven't learned yet if I can get back my customization, but I will pursue this within the KDE forum, since it appears to be a better source for this type of issue.

Thanks again to LQ as a great information resource!

Well, as you've figured out, there are none. This is because you want the configuration files for

wallpapers, fonts, icons, etc
... which is a little too general.

The old KDE setting are maintained when you "upgrade" - usually. Unless there has been a major change (like when you go from 8 to 10 without touching base at 9) or you use a lot of third-party software. You can also do a fresh install, an keep your settings, if you remembered to keep your home directory in it's own partition. Again - if things change too much, the settings files may have changed format.

You bring back your comfy environment by copying the old .KDE directory over... or use the gui tools to put it back. This time, take notes.

Of course, not getting a full KDE install will mess everything up.

Anyway, good luck with the KDE forums ...
